As a friend of Unicorn, you may have heard about or even attended our monthly Reunion Dinner.
This tradition began over 20 years ago, inspired by a vision from our Chairman, Patrick Tan. As he advanced through the management ranks at his previous company, he was reminded of his father’s sobering words: “With more power comes more responsibility.” This instilled in him a deep sense of duty to care for his team and help them grow, both personally and professionally.
Guided by this wisdom, Patrick was determined to cultivate a family-like culture among his team members. His vision was to create a Unicorn where there are no colleagues, only family members; no clients, only friends.
Patrick noticed how people evolved in the workforce. Young people, driven by newfound affluence, often chase material needs, while those more seasoned in their careers sacrifice work-life balance to sustain their growing desires. In this blur of professional and personal boundaries, many lose sight of what family truly means and forget their fundamental human values.
Having grown up in a Kampung, Patrick always enjoyed the “kampung spirit” and intimate relationships forged between human beings. Therefore, he wanted to replicate a similar environment where his staff can not only build meaningful relationships with one another but also to grow and develop as a person.
Our reunion dinners start with big-hearted family members gathering to prepare food and arrange the space, just as you would in a Kampung. They willingly render their help, reflecting the spirit of support that defines Unicorn. From barbecuing food to serving our friends, everyone in Unicorn has this spirit inside them, where it is their second nature to serve.
